Mit 26 Jahren und 5 Monaten weist sein Pontifikat die zweitlängste belegbare Dauer in der Geschichte der katholischen Kirche auf. Johannes Paul 2. war der bislang einzige polnische und auch der einzige slawische Papst. Ihm wird eine maßgebliche Rolle bei der Beendigung des Sozialismus in Osteuropa und speziell in seinem Heimatland Polen zugeschrieben. In Bezug auf Homosexualität forderte Johannes Paul von Lesben und Schwulen Keuschheit.
