About this ebook

In this book, the authors address some basic problems in the learning of biomedical science, medicine, and the other health sciences. Students in most medical schools, especially in basic science courses, are required to memorize a large number of "facts," facts which may or may not be relevant to medical practice. Problem-based learning has two fundamental postulates--the learning through problem-solving is much more effective for creating a body of knowledge usable in the future, and that physician skills most important for patients are problem-solving skills, rather than memory skills.

This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem-based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn.

Amazing !. I just read the first few pages available on net. I am going to recommend strongly to keep multiple copies in our library and as a core member in medical education , i will take all efforts to see that every faculty reads this book, understand and apply the concepts discussed in this book. Thought the PBL is adopted in many places, it is totally misunderstood and i fear that the faculty engaged in medical education really are able to realise the concerns of Howard S.Barrows,to its real depth. It is very painful to see that PBL is totally moulded to fit in the traditional curriculum for convenience of keeping the teacher as the knowledge provider and ease of assessment. This is my introduction to the introductory pages I read. I will be sending my reviews again, once after completing the reading. Regards, Dr.Ursula
