Nicht weit entfernt tönte ein Schiffshorn; wahrscheinlich ein Kriegsschiff, denn Flussdampfer kreuzten nach Sonnenuntergang nicht mehr auf dem Potomac. Unruhig trat Wilbur J. Lewellyn von einem Fuß auf den anderen. Seine Hände waren feucht und gern hätte er sich einen Zigarillo angezündet. Doch der Mann, auf den er wartete, stand im Ruf, unberechenbar zu sein. Auf keinen Fall wollte er riskieren, ihn plötzlich mit geladenem Karabiner im Rücken zu haben. Also zügelte er seine Sucht. Endlich der vereinbarte Ruf des Käuzchens, und Schritte näherten sich. "Er kommt", flüsterte jemand zwischen den Bäumen.
