About this ebook

***WINNER OF THE ORWELL PRIZE FOR POLITICAL WRITING 2023***

'Never before, in years of reviewing books about buildings, has one brought me to tears. This one did.' Rowan Moore, Observer Book of the Week

On 14 June 2017, a 24-storey block of flats went up in flames.

The fire climbed up cladding as flammable as solid petrol. Fire doors failed to self-close. No alarm rang out to warn sleeping residents. As smoke seeped into their homes, all were told to ‘stay put’. Many did – and they died.

It was a tragedy decades in the making.

Peter Apps meticulously exposes how a steady stream of deregulation, corporate greed and institutional indifference caused a tragedy. 72 people did not need to die, as the Grenfell Tower Inquiry makes clear. Here is the story of a grieving community forsaken by our government, a community still waiting for justice.

Sincere condolences to all those affected by the fire. Yet again money over people, why are we ever surprised?? This country used to be trusted, laws were just, vulnerable protected and those at lower scale of income protected by governments ensuring we could sleep safe at night protected by legislation. That is past- making money, saving money is all that matters- saving money & spending less(on those who are in most need), ensuring that those who have money keep more or get more. EXAMPLE: millionaire PM accept thousands of pounds worth of gifts they can afford to buy.... Then- take away the heating allowances for pensioners!! Always go after those who are the hardest hit. No matter what you say about Rishi- he helped the least affluent in our society pay our fuel bills, not take away funding. Typical "Sir Robbing" - take from the poor, let the rich get richer & the gap between gets wider. You know who you are, shame on you. RIP those lost to greed, neligence & catastrophe.🙏

This was at times a difficult book to read. I needed to try and understand how such a disaster could happen. I appreciate the author's careful examination and the courage of those affected. It seems to me that we now live in an age of increasing dangers and threats to our future. In the facing things such as pandemics and climate change it appears those who presently govern us are incapable of meeting such challenges. The survivors of the Grenfell tragedy had good friends and neighbours of many kinds, let's all try and be good neighbours. It may not save the world but it will make it a better place for the present. Thanks to Peter Apps and his colleagues for telling this story.
