From what I understand, this is the original version of the nutcracker story that the ballet is based on. It has a lot of the elements of a more traditional fairy tale, and while the progression is a little more difficult to follow and the writing a little more disjointed, it's a fascinating story and I most definitely enjoyed it.

This story is not as ordered as the ballet that is based upon it, but the story offers a wonder and magic all its own.
