A ship sets sail with a killer on board . . .

1859. A man joins a whaling ship bound for the Arctic Circle. But when, deep into the journey, a cabin boy is discovered brutally killed, Sumner finds himself forced to act. Soon he will face an evil even greater than he had encountered at the siege of Delhi, in the shape of Henry Drax: harpooner, murderer, monster . . .

'A tour de force' Hilary Mantel

'Riveting and darkly brilliant' Colm Tóibín

'One of my favourite books ever' Richard Osman

What a wonderful surprise this book was. It's totally gripping right from the get go and stays that way until the rather brilliant ending. The author does an incredible job of bringing a long gone era to life and the story is rich in detail and the atmosphere of Whaling culture in that time. The same can be said for the depictions of the environment and the bitter cold of the Arctic. The story is truly brutal in places but the violence never feels gratuitous. I really couldn't put it down. Fantastic!
