About this ebook

"Determined heroine, sympathetic hero - up to a point - with an excellent mix of hijinks and danger. Rose Prendeville is an author to watch and Mistress Mackintosh and the Shaw Wretch is a delightful historical romance. Highly recommend!" —Elizabeth Everett, author of A Lady's Formula for Love

Description

In 1725, a secret convent has been established on the Aberdeenshire coast.

Jory Mackintosh is more excited by healing herbs than husbands or holy prayers. She craves freedom—and a chance to sneak into medical school. Instead, on the eve of her escape, she becomes an unwilling pawn in her family’s schemes with a rival clan.

Finlay Shaw, the disgraced younger brother of the laird, has spent ten long years atoning for his past failures, but nothing can wash away the stain of fratricide. When the clans order him to escort Jory to her new life as a nun, thus securing an alliance with the freshly formed Black Watch, it’s his last chance for redemption. Too bad for Finn, Jory has no intention of following orders.

Trapped on the road together, often with only one bed between them, the two butt heads and match wits, forced to acknowledge the dark shadows that have haunted them both for years. Can they learn to trust each other, and themselves, to fly in the face of their families’ wishes, or will they choose the solitary futures they always believed they deserve in this unorthodox runaway bride story?

Mistress Mackintosh & the Shaw Wretch is the first volume of the new Brides of Chattan series, a Highland historical romance, set in Jacobite Scotland featuring a feisty heroine and cinnamon roll hero, enemies to lovers on a road trip. If you enjoy authors like Elizabeth Everett, Jennifer Ashley, Manda Collins, Evie Dunmore, Joanna Lowell, Julia Quinn, and Tessa Dare, checkout this delightful romance today.

Absolutely loved this book.I loved Jory and Finn right from the start.Theirs is a sweet slow burn love story.Loved the banter between the characters. It had me gripped.Started off really well, then slowed down a little bit, then picked up again.Once it picked up i could not put it down, had to finish it.Loved how their road trip progressed and the author took the time to actually not rush it and described in detail what happened during every single day of their journey. They are a very sweet couple and both thinking they are not good enough for each other and battling with their own demons, not telling each other their feelings.I was rooting for their happily ever after and they got there in the end with lots of drama and twists along the way. Highly reccomend this book and cannot wait for the next book in the series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was a bit of a slow going start for me, and I almost gave up... but then it clicked for me. Jory and Finn ended up being warmly written, nuanced characters with an interesting intertwined history, and the story was laced with some very thoughtfully presented pieces of history at the time that I found quite interesting. As well, it was interesting how Jory's scoliosis was mixed in and how they have a shared interest in healing/helping others.

I never thought I would enjoy historical romances but now I find myself gravitating to these wonderful stories. They have a special ability of incorporating a historical event or moment in time with a beautiful tale of love and romance. It’s my one true reality escape, ensconcing me in a new world, new experiences with a dash of history. ‘Mistress Mackintosh and the Shaw Wretch’ is a charming story that delivers. I highly recommend this book.
