the best book on Zen that I've ever read. describes the practice and the pitfalls and every day, down-to-earth language. there's not a lot of highfalutin philosophy, as Joko was very much against this. in her view, if you've achieved something of a state of awareness, compassion will naturally emerge and your everyday problems will begin to dissipate. she emphasizes that it is hard work. I think this is important, because many people get into zen thinking they're just going to get enlightened pretty quickly. but it takes Decades of practice. is it worth it? That's for you to decide.
