Er erreichte eine ungewöhnlich breite Leserschaft und wurde auch von einflussreichen zeitgenössischen Kritikern wie Wissarion Grigorjewitsch Belinski teilweise euphorisch aufgenommen. Er wurde 1846 erstmals in der Zeitschrift Peterburgski Sbornik veröffentlicht.
