Nietzsche las das Werk in einem Zug und befand sich danach, wie er schreibt, eine ganze Zeit wie im Rausch. Schopenhauer hatte ihm eine philosophische Begründung und Erklärung geliefert für das eigene dunkle Lebensgefühl, das ihn seit seiner Kindheit belastete. In einer Welt, die so ist, wie Schopenhauer sie schildert, konnte man vernünftigerweise nur Pessimist sein. Schopenhauers Lehre bedeutete somit für Nietzsche auch eine persönliche Entlastung und Rechtfertigung. Damit war die Liebe zur Philosophie in den jungen Nietzsche eingepflanzt und auch schon das Fundament seines späteren Weltbilds.
