Clever and witty story where the Fossils’ music was recorded onto a disc and submitted to a contest by Kipper, a local DJ … and won. The media went wild over a young up and coming group, except that the Fossils were only locals performing for fun and came from the Fossdyke Old Folks’ Home! Their madcap adventures follow as they try to dodge their adoring fans. If you love some laughter and crazy adventures, give this story a try. It’s definitely different from other tales you might read about rock stars.

About the author

Fossils: Viagra, Snuff, and Rock and Roll by Robert A. Webster is a brilliantly written rockumentary story about four senior citizens that meet in a retirement home. When Charles loses his wife, he and his grand piano are placed in a retirement home.

On his first day, Charles meets three new friends that talk him into joining their rock and roll band. With their stage names, Steve is "Strat" on guitar; Wayne is "Chippers," and with his false fingers he is on Bass; Elvin is "Sticks" on the drums, and then they choose the name "Knobby" for Charles to which he agrees. Then they choose the perfect name for their band of old-timers, "Fossils." The band had met with much disapproval until Charles, "Knobby," joins and they begin writing their own songs. When they decide to take a chance and play in a local pub, what started out as jokes and jeers quickly changed to applause and cheers from the crowd. Their popularity grows when DJ "Kipper" records them and submits the recording to a contest to find the next great band in the UK since the Beatles.

Mr. Webster does an amazing job of breathing life into this comedic masterpiece. Once the band gets to southeast Asia, their popularity grows as much as their lust for life. Their life of sex, drugs, rock and roll, and alcohol could easily rival that of the most iconic bands during the British invasion. The author describes in detail the lifestyle, atmosphere, and culture of Southeast Asia. The author is able to move the story back and forth from Southeast Asia to the United Kingdom where the band's popularity is growing as fast as their sales. The legend of this mysterious band grows as the band evades the freelance photographers and journalists looking to make a name for themselves. Robert A. Webster's knowledge of music and instruments is right on point, as well as the prostitutes that take advantage of our lonely senior citizens.

As the book neared its end, Fossils had me hollering "Encore!" The surprise that caught me off guard had me laughing out loud at the author's genius. Encore!
