Dr Bhargava received her education in Delhi, India, graduating from Lady Hardinge Medical College. She spent much of her career at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, retiring as Professor and Head of Haematology in 2001. She then led Haematology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital until 2016 and served as Senior Advisor and Head of Hematopathology at Medanta until May 2020. A pioneer in hematology in India, Dr Bhargava is recognized both nationally and internationally. She distinguished hematology as a separate discipline and received prestigious fellowships, including Alexander von Humboldt, Fogarty, and INSA. With over 300 publications, she has been principal investigator on several international research grants. She received the Dr B.C. Roy National Award and the Basanti Devi Amirchand prize.Dr Bhargava established the first DM degrees in Clinical Hematology and Hematopathology at AIIMS in 2000 and the Diplomate National Board in Hematology in 2008. Her book, "Hematologic Malignancies: Case Studies in Cytogenetic and Molecular Genetics," was published in 2021.
