Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo (29 September 1864 – 31 December 1936) was a Spanish essayist, novelist, poet, playwright, philosopher, and educator. He was one of the most significant intellectual figures in 20th-century Spain and a prominent representative of the Generation of 1898, a group of Spanish writers and thinkers who were critical of the social, political, and cultural situation of Spain at the turn of the century.
