Nataniel Aguirre is considered one of the leading writers of his country. His narrative style differed from that of the late nineteenth century colonial trend of memoirs and historical reconstructions. His work served as a bridge between deciduous and budding romance and realism. A member of the Generation of 1880, his works include Retaliation Hero, The Biography of Francis Burdett O'Connor, and Bolivia in the War of the Pacific. He also wrote plays and poetry.
