Nirmala Purushotam

Nirmala Srirekam PuruShotam, is a scholar who has written various books, including Negotiating Multiculturalism: Disciplining Difference in Singapore and co-authored the award winning Singapore's Little India. Past, Present, and Future. PuruShotam's earlier career was largely with the National University of Singapore, where she resigned a tenured position to allow her time to work both as an independent researcher and to expand her genres of writing to include fiction and poetry. She is currently working on Making Space for Doing Race, which looks at the phenomenon of how race-associated identities are accomplished in everyday life, with particular regard to the arrival of new categories of people that only superficially reflect the old model of Singapore's multiracialism. She is also working on a series of four book for children, The Pink Hippo, obliquely referencing difference and how to deal with its positive and negative aspects.
