William Rutherford is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Southern California, where he was also Director of the American Language Institute from 1981 to 1984. His publications, ranging over language acquisition, language pedagogy, and grammatical theory, include Second Language Grammar: Learning and Teaching (1987) and, as editor, Language Universals and Second Language Acquisition (1987). From 1988 to 1998 he was co-general editor of the monograph series Language acquisition and Language Disorders. In 1995 he was the recipient of an edited festschrift volume: The Current State of Interlanguage: Studies in Honor of William E. Rutherford.
