About this ebook

The deadly conspiracy against the Annurian Empire's ruling family deepens in this gripping sequel to The Emperor's Blades.

Adare, having learned the identity of her father's assassin, flees the Dawn Palace to seek allies and challenge the coup against her family. Though few trust her, belief in Intarra's touch upon her rallies the people to help retake the capital city. As armies prepare to clash, the threat of barbarian hordes compels rival forces to unite against a common enemy.

Unknown to Adare, her brother Valyn, a renegade elite soldier, has allied with the invading nomads. The terrible choices each sibling has made may make war between them inevitable.

Kaden, the rightful heir to the Unhewn Throne, has infiltrated the Annurian capital with two strange companions. The secret history they know could save Annur or destroy it in The Providence of Fire, the second novel in Brian Staveley's Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne, an epic fantasy series of war, intrigue, and sacrifice.

Brian's ability to write is reminiscent of Robert Jordan or Terry Goodkind, not just in wording but in the way the reader becomes enthralled within each character and absorbed into their each separate and unique designs. Mind blowing schematic detail at the beginning of every chapter conveys this book into the epic annals of the fantasy worlds most prestigious elite.

Basic military fantasy redeemed by extremely strong writing. Five stars for action, minus 1/2 star for over-reliance on torture as a plot device, and minus a further 1/2 star for giving most main characters inescapably 'modern' voices. A worthy successor to a brilliant debut, but you can't help wondering if he could have done a bit better.

Wow! this book was just such a joy to read. I only wish it was longer so I could still be enjoying it. I rejoice in finding another great author of my favorite genre. The last decade has seen fantasy as a genre and medium being elevated to ever greater heights. For me at least it started with George R.R. Martin followed by Steven Erikson and Joe Abercrombie all wonderful authors but now their are so many other amazing writers it's hard to keep track, but Brian manages to stand apart.
