Beide Modelle dienen der formalen Modellierung von Datenstrukturen. Chronologisch betrachtet entstand das Netzwerk-Datenbankmodell vor dem relationalen, das versucht, die Schwächen des älteren Modells zu kompensieren. Heute hat sich das relationale Datenbankmodell zum Standard für Unternehmen weltweit etabliert und wird daher sogar in Schulen unterrichtet.
