Es war an einem späten Nachmittag, als ich nach Ute City kam. Mein Weg war lang gewesen, und auch an diesem Tag war ich viele Meilen geritten. Mein schwarzweiß gefleckter Pinto hatte ein Eisen verloren und lahmte leicht. Deshalb bog ich in den Hof der Schmiede ein, saß ab und trat in das halb offene Gebäude, wo der Schmied bei der Arbeit war. Ich wartete, bis er fertig war und das noch heiße Hufeisen in den Wasserbehälter warf. Dann betrachtete er mein Pferd, das hinter mir stand und mir den Atem in den Nacken blies. »Ich habe es schon gesehen«, sprach er. »Der Pinto braucht vorne links ein neues Eisen. Sie sind weit geritten, Cowboy?« »Was sonst?«, fragte ich zurück. »Sehe ich anders aus als ein Cowboy?« Sein Blick glitt an mir nieder und blieb dann kurz auf meine Hüfte gerichtet. Dort hing sonst mein schwerer Revolver. Doch den hatte ich mitsamt Gurt und Holster eingewickelt und in meiner dicken Sattelrolle verborgen. Denn ich wollte nicht als Revolvermann erkannt werden.
