Der Band widmet sich einem Thema, das große öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit genießt: dem Wissen von Jugendlichen zur DDR-Geschichte. Die Autorin hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, verbreitete Thesen um nostalgische DDR-Vorstellungen ostdeutscher Jugendlicher zu korrigieren. Es wird untersucht, welche Urteile sich Heranwachsende unter dem Eindruck divergierender Deutungen in Familie und Geschichtskultur über den Staatssozialismus bilden. Durch ein innovatives Forschungsdesign aus repräsentativer Befragung und vertiefenden Einzelinterviews wird so vermeintliche Diktaturverharmlosung erklärbar. This volume deals with a subject attracting great public interest: what young people know about the history of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). An evidence-based analysis of school students' perceptions of the GDR is offered in contrast to persistent accusations of nostalgia for the East German Communist era and the supposed failure of history lessons in teaching contemporary history. The study examines the judgments formed by adolescents about State Socialism when presented with differing interpretations within families and historical culture. Its innovative research design, combining representative questionnaires with in-depth individual interviews, clarifies the purported historical whitewashing of the dictatorship.

Dr. Kathrin Klausmeier ist Lehrbeauftragte an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena und der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Zudem ist sie im nordrhein-westfälischen Schuldienst tätig.
