Ein Amt aus dieser Notitia, der in Mainz residierende Dux Mogontiacensis, Kommandeur für den Oberrhein, ist Gegenstand des Buches. Darin gelingt es dem Autor, Entstehung und Zweck der Notitia neu zu bestimmen. Zugleich führt diese Arbeit erstmals die regional orientierte, deutsche archäologische Forschung zu den spätantiken Gebieten am Rhein mit den neuen angelsächsisch geprägten Studien zur Notitia zusammen.
