Il titolo fa riferimento a un personaggio del folklore scozzese e britannico, che in gergo costituisce la personificazione della birra e del whisky, prodotti entrambi derivati dall'orzo (appunto barley). Il romanzo è una tragica autobiografia alcolica di Jack London, che inizia a descrivere e analizzare le sue "memorie alcoliche" partendo da una conversazione con la moglie. Iniziando dalla prima volta in cui, da bambino, ha assaggiato una birra e ne è rimasto traumatizzato, a quando si vede costretto a bere per farsi accettare dalla società, il racconto è un saliscendi di emozioni contrastanti, che portano il lettore a provare una profonda empatia per il protagonista.
