हिंदी कथा-साहित्य के सुप्रसिद्ध गांधीवादी रचनाकार श्री विष्णु प्रभाकर अपने पारिवारिक परिवेश से कहानी लिखने की ओर प्रवृत्त हुए बाल्यकाल में ही उन दिनों की प्रसिद्ध ' उन्होंने पढ़ डाली थीं ।
उनकी प्रथम कहानी नवंबर 1931 के 'हिंदी मिलाप ' में छपी । इसका कथानक बताते हुए वे लिखते हैं-' परिवार का स्वामी जुआ खेलता है; शराब पीता है; उस दिन दिवाली का दिन था । घर का मालिक जुए में सबकुछ लुटाकर शराब के नशे में धुत्त दरवाजे पर आकर गिरता है । घर के भीतर अंधकार है । बच्चे तरस रहे हैं कि पिताजी आएँ और मिठाई लाएँ । माँ एक ओर असहाय मूकदर्शक बनकर सबकुछ देख रही है । यही कुछ थी वह मेरी पहली कहानी ।
सन् 1954 में प्रकाशित उनकी कहानी ' धरती अब भी घूम रही है ' काफी लोकप्रिय हुई । लेखक का मानना है कि जितनी प्रसिद्धि उन्हें इस कहानी से मिली; उतनी चर्चित पुस्तक ' आवारा मसीहा ' से भी नहीं मिली ।
श्री विष्णुजी की कहानियों पर आर्यसमाज; प्रगतिवाद और समाजवाद का गहरा प्रभाव है । पर अपनी कहानियों के व्यापक फलक के मद्देनजर उनका मानना है कि ' मैं न आदर्शों से बँधा हूँ न सिद्धांतों से । बस; भोगे हुए यथार्थ की पृष्ठभूमि में उस उदात्त की खोज में चलता आ रहा हूँ । .झूठ का सहारा मैंने कभी नहीं लिया । '
उदात्त; यथार्थ और सच के धरातल पर उकेरी उनकी संपूर्ण कहानियों हम पाठकों की सुविधा के लिए आठ खंडों में प्रस्तुत कर रहे हैं । ये कहानियाँ मनोरंजक तो हैं ही; नव पीढ़ी को आशावादी बनानेवाली; प्रेरणादायी और जीवनोन्मुख भी हैं ।
