About this ebook

A USA Today bestseller "takes readers on a whirlwind ride" in this "gratifying" thriller featuring a traumatized female PI as she hunts a serial killer ( New York Journal of Books ).

Private investigator Karin Schaeffer receives the call meant for her detective husband Mac on a Sunday night: two females found on a Brooklyn street. The first is an eleven-year-old girl, the apparent victim of a hit-and-run. But it's the second body that truly chills the blood--a young corpse bearing the grisly, unmistakable signature of a serial slayer who has eluded the NYPD for years.
But there's something frightening different about these latest atrocities--a kink that is leading Schaeffer's unofficial investigation down strange and twisting alleys where nothing is as it originally seems. And the haunted P.I., who once lost everything to a psychopath, is suddenly facing the darkness once again...when the horror strikes too close to home and those she loves are in danger of vanishing forever.

"I can always count on Katia Lief for gripping, twist-filled psychological suspense." —Wendy Corsi Staub, New York Times bestselling author

"Mesmerizing....Your heart will be pounding." —Lisa Gardner, New York Times bestselling author

Karin Schaeffer has become a private detective after serving as a police woman. She has had a rough past but her life as the wife to Mac and mother to young Ben seems blissful. But now her husband Mac is down with the flu. Karin's friend, Billy, a black police detective, has spent a year chasing down the Working Girl Killer, someone who has murdered seven prostitutes. Then, the murdered body of another "working girl" is discovered and, to top it all, the badly injured body of a young girl, Abby Dekker, is found nearby, struck down by a passing car. Her wealthy parents' mutilated bodies are discovered in their nearby apartment. Things get much worse as Chali, Karin's babysitter for little Ben, is found in her bathtub, killed in the same manner as the prostitutes. Innocent Chali is not a hooker but a single mother looking forward to assuming custody of her daughter Dathi, who lives in India. Karin works with Billy and his partner, "Dash", to find out who and what are behind these killings. "Vanishing Girls" is a well-written and well-edited police thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Main character Karin Schaeffer is totally believable. She is a hard-working investigator who makes her way through evidence that points to high-powered men and their South American fun and games. Billy, sassy-mouthed Dash, and even Mac with his high-fevered flu are well-created and add to the story. The story's plot line grows step by step to its conclusion and thriller fans will want to add this series by Katia Lief to their list of thrillers to follow.
